La Purisima is the first mission dedicated to Mary, the Blessed Virgin. The full appellation: La Purisima Concepción de Maria Santísma. Founded by Padre Lasuén, it originally contained over 100 adobe buildings. But damage by the huge California earthquake of 1812 was so complete that a new site was chosen four miles northeast of the original site, even further off the Camino Real than originally planned. The new area was ideal for cattle and sheep ranching, and the Mission also became notable for weaving, pottery and leather work which were incorporated into the area's religious life.
